BREAKING NEWS | Infiniti Changes Model Names — Q50, Q60, Q70, QX50, QX60, QX70, QX80

By James | Posted in Dealer Information, Infiniti News on Monday, December 17th, 2012 at 7:05 pm

We’re still getting the facts together, but Paul and I JUST got off a conference call for all Infiniti retailers and dealers across the US, Canada, Mexico, the Carribean and more.  This is huge, this is big, this is massive for Infiniti customers and the future of the Infiniti line, and we are just chomping at the bit to get this news out to you.

First off, we learned that Infiniti as a brand has taken a HUGE leap forward in it’s brand satisfaction surveys as measured by J.D. Power and Associates.  At one point, earlier on in the brand’s history, Infinitie was ranked quite low for customer satisfaction among luxury brands, but this is no longer even close to the case – according to the most recent survey, a strong, committed process that focuses fully on customer satisfaction and a stellar guest experience on the Infiniti showrooms has Infiniti positioned in the #2 spot for customer satisfaction across ALL vehicle brands, luxury or not.  This most recent jump in the standings is a historic one, marking the single largest year-to-year jump for any brand, ever recorded in the history of these polls.  It’s stellar news for the Infiniti brand, a point of personal pride for us as an Infiniti dealer in Ottawa, ON, and best of all, it’s great news for our loyal Infiniti customers, who we want to thank for such glowing reviews to J.D. Power.

On that note, let’s get to the announcements.  The naming convention for the Infiniti vehicle lineup has changed, and changed in a big way, and we’re going to lay it out for you as simply as we can.  The punchline is that previous vehicle designations will be completely overhauled, in favour of a new, streamlined naming convention that allows for a more connected, integrated naming strategy.  This new naming strategy accomplishes a couple of goals here – sedans/coupes/convertibles will new be grouped under the ‘Q‘ designation (currently Q50, Q60, Q70), and crossovers/SUVs will now all be grouped under the ‘QX‘ designation (currently QX50, QX60, QX70, QX80).  The 50 / 60 / 70 / etc suffixes should scale and designate the further one travels upward along the curve towards ultra-premium vehicles, and as Infiniti continues to add new products to the lineup, it should be pretty easy to guess where new models will fit in.  For example, it’s easy to guess that a compact SUV or sport wagon might come in under the EX35 (now called QX50) as a new QX40, or a new sport sedan higher up in prestige than the current Infiniti M (Q70 sedan) might be labelled a Q80.

The naming structure is also now no longer tied to engine displacement as they previously were (G37 for 3.7L engines, QX56 for 5.6L), and the engine designations may appear as a separate badging, details are still cloudy about that one.

The launch of the Q and QX lineups will begin with the all-new Infiniti 2014 Q50 sedan (an overhaul based off of the current gen Infiniti G sedan) which will debut at the Detroit International Auto Show sometime in January 2013.  As the year progresses, we believe that we’ll see the rest of the lineup redesigned and re-badged into the new model designations.

We’ve worked up a simple visual aid here to help understand the transition, as well as the new naming structure for each vehicle.

Infiniti Q series sedans, coupes and convertibles (2014 Infiniti Q50 sedan, 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe, 2014 Infiniti Q60 convertible and the 2014 Infiniti Q70 premium sedan):

The current G37, G37x and G37S sedan will now be called the Infiniti Q50 sedan, and the 2014 Q50 sedan will be the first vehicle unveiled to the public at the Detroit International Auto Show this coming January 2013.

The G37 and G37x and G37S coupe will now be known as the 2014 Infiniti Q60 coupe.  The Q60 coupe shares the same Infiniti Q60 badging with the new Q60 convertible.

The current top of the line Infiniti sedan, the Infiniti M, will now become the new Infiniti Q70 premium luxury sedan.  As beautiful as it is, we have word from Infiniti corporate that a new, ultra premium big brother to the new 2014 Infiniti Q70 sedan is also in the works, something that we’d guess is designed to better compete with the top end german brands (BMW 7 series, Audi A8, Mercedes S class, etc.)  For now though, the Q70 remains the top dog luxury sedan in the Infiniti lineup.

Infiniti QX series crossovers and SUVs (2014 Infiniti QX50 compact crossover, 2014 Infiniti QX60 7-seat luxury crossover, 2014 Infiniti QX70 performance crossover and the 2014 Infiniti QX80 premium fullsize SUV):

First up is what we now refer to as the EX35 – it will become the baseline QX offering in the new naming convention, the Infiniti QX50.

Next, the new 2013 Infiniti JX35, Infiniti’s latest new product and the new industry standard for the 7-seat luxury segment.  The Infiniti JX35 will now be known as the Infiniti QX60.

Infiniti’s current performance luxury SUV, the Infiniti FX35 and the Infiniti FX50 with the larger engine, will now be known as the Infiniti QX70.

And finally, the big Infiniti QX56, will now be renamed to the top of the line Infiniti QX80 luxury fullsize SUV, taking it’s seat at the top of the QX line of Infiniti crossover and SUVs.
